Attributes In ERPNext

Attributes play a vital role in almost every industry. Whether it is manufacturing, retail or any other, attributes are everywhere. We can define Item Attributes as a measure used to differentiate products from one another in terms of color, size, fabric, weight, and many more.

In ERPNext, master data is a crucial part and needs to be handled proactively. Attributes and Variants is one of the parameters of the master data. With ERPNext, attributes and variants can be managed in such an easy way. In simple terms, Item attributes are usually characteristics of the item by which item can be bifurcated such as size, colour codes, length etc.

 

Create Attribute in ERPNext

Item attribute in ERPNext can be created by navigating to the stock > item attribute > add an item.

To add an item attribute we may need to define attribute name, can tick checkbox as a numeric value if the attribute is in something that is related to the numeric value and we can define the specific from range and to range for the numeric value and increment. 

Increment would be the specific value to create new variants based on that such as for the ring sizes the increment would be 0.5 , so the variants would be 1, 1.5,2,2.5,3,3.5 and more.

For the non-numeric attributes such as colour, size etc.. we just need to define attribute value and abbreviation- an abbreviation is a short code that represents the attribute value.

• Item Attribute
• Manufacturer

1. Item Attribute

With the help of attributes we can create new variants of the items by checking the box “HAS VARIANTS”  for instance- A ceramic cup with multiple variants such as colour- black, grey, and pink.

• Navigate to stock module > item
• Open item and tick the checkbox has variants
• In the variants tab > select the variant based on item attribute or manufacture > select the attribute that we have created such as colour and size etc and save.
• Click on the button create > create single or multiple variants

 

If we want to create a single variant we may have the option to choose the attribute value to be created.

If we have chosen to create a multiple variant, we may need to choose multiple attribute values to create multiple variants.

2. Manufacturer:

To manage variants based on manufacturer we need to select the variant based on “manufacturer” in the variants tab of a particular item.

By clicking on the button create we can create a variant, by defining a particular manufacturer and manufacturer part number.

The sequence of the create variant would be based on the item suffix such as if the item is ceramic cup its variant would be ceramic cup 1.

Use-case of Attribute in ERPNext

Now let us take an example/ use-case scenario to discuss how to create and manage the item attributes in ERPNext. 

Let’s assume Ammie Ltd is a retail clothing store which sells t-shirts in different colors, sizes, and fabrics. We will see how in ERPNext we can create these item attributes and manage the sales of the t-shirts.

● Navigate to the stock > item > create an item.

Next is to create item attributes. To do so, navigate to stock module > settings > item attribute. From here, we can create new item attributes such as color, size, fabric, and more.

To create a variant, tick the checkbox that has a variant and add an attribute name in the variants tab. Now we can assign created attributes to the item under the variants tab.

By clicking the create button we can create a single or multiple variants as we discussed earlier in the doc.

Now to create a multiple variant, click on the multiple variants and select the values from it to create item variants.

And related item variants will be created and we can use it for further inventory transactions.
